Officer of a tercio formation Battle of Rocroi 1643

Presentation: The model represents a Spanish officer in one of the tercio formations present at the Battle of Rocroi in 1643.

History: The Battle of Rocroi is one of the episodes in the Thirty Years War (1618-1648) in which France, although a Catholic power, sided with the Protestant coalition against the Hasburg Empire which also included Spain. Rocroi is a town in north-eastern France that, in 1643, was besieged by a 26,000 strong Imperial army, consisting mainly of Spanish soldiers. The battle was won by the French, and the Spanish suffered 7,500 casualties, including their commander, the Count of Fuentes. The French commanders were: Louis of Bourbon Duke of Enghien, and General Despenau who had 17,000 infantrymen and 6,000 cavalrymen in their following. The Imperial forces had 18,000 infantrymen and 9,000 cavalrymen under the command of Fuentes and Francesco De Mello, governor of Flanders.
The Spanish infantry was divided into five tercios. The tercio was a battle formation for the infantry, coming from the Spanish colunellas, which, between the end of the XVI century and the first decades of the XVII was adopted by all the European armies. A tercio formation was made up of between 3,000 and 5,000 men and moved as a square with a nucleus of pikemen at whose corners were small square formations of musketeers. This type of formation made a strong attacking force possible, along with deadly firing capacity and formidable defence from the opposing cavalry through the intervention of the pikemen. The best tercio formations were Italian, Spanish and Flemish.

Painting: We recommend that the artist look at the picture of the model shown on the website and conform to indications given in the sector literature, or otherwise use imagination.
